John was appointed to Gateshead Police in October 1964, transferring to Durham County Constabulary in October 1968 because of force amalgamations, and posted to Durham.
He resigned in August 1969 and in March 1970 was further appointed to Northumbria. In July 1974 John transferred to Durham Constabulary.
He spent a short time with Motor Patrols, although much of his service was spent with the Firearm Department. When promoted to the rank of Sergeant in June 1980 he was posted to Seaham, spending a year there, before returning to the Firearms Department as a Firearms Training Officer, a position he held until his retirement in April 1995.
In 1991, John was the winner of the Matt Wilkinson Memorial Trophy.
He was a founding member of the Durham Police Shooting Club and continued as Chairman, beyond his retirement.
John is survived by wife Rosalind.
A private cremation was held on 11th February 2026.
Our thoughts are with John’s family and friends at this sad time.
