Tasers are to be made available to every frontline officer in Durham Constabulary

Tasers are to be made available to every frontline officer in Durham Constabulary who wishes to be equipped with one.

In a move designed to offer more protection to both the public and the police, all frontline officers are being offered upgraded Tasers and given intensive training in the safe use of the devices.

Over the next 12 months, the new X2 model will be rolled out across the force, replacing the original X26 which has been used for the last 14 years.

Chief Constable Jo Farrell said: “Sadly, there are situations in which police officers need to take immediate action to subdue violent suspects to protect the public.

“Tasers allow us to do so swiftly and safely, without causing lasting injury and are an extremely effective means of dealing with the many dangerous situations officers find themselves in.

“Too often our officers are subject to assaults in the line of duty, simply for doing their job.

“We need to make sure that our officers have the tools they need to protect the public and protect themselves”.

Tasers were first introduced into Durham in 2005, when they were issued to a handful of authorised firearms officers to provide a “less lethal” option in situations where lives were potentially at risk.

The device works by firing two small barbed darts up to a range of around 10 metres, which deliver an electrical current and temporarily incapacitate the suspect until they can be restrained.

The more powerful X2 model Taser features a number of improvements on earlier versions of the system, most notably the capacity to fire a second cartridge if the first misses its target.

Andy Jackson, chairman of Durham Police Federation, said: “I strongly support the wider roll-out of Taser to all frontline officers should they wish to be equipped with it.

“Taser is an extremely effective means of dealing with the many dangerous situations that officers often face on the streets and is a less lethal option than more conventional firearms.

“In a number of cases where Taser is drawn, it is not fired as the deterrent is enough, which helps protect communities as well as protecting officers from assaults”.

End Single Crewing and roll out TASER to all POLICE OFFICERS

This petition has been started on Change.org :

“We are your police. Since the inception of a professional police force, the object has been that the police are the people, and the people are the police. We are you. We are your children, your brothers and sisters, aunties and uncles, parents and grandparents, friends, neighbours and colleagues. We go out to work every day to make you feel safer, and to try to make your life better. When you call, we come. We have families too. We care. We protect you and we deserve to be protected. We can do this more effectively if we are double crewed, and if Taser is rolled out to all officers. Serious assaults are increasing on officers. This can be prevented or reduced, with two simple changes. Please support us to create a safer country. Thank you.”

Dick Shepherd Triumph Collection at BikeWise 2019

If you like classic bikes the this is a must see. These bikes have never been on public display

Long time BikeWise supporter Dick Shepherd boasts an enviable collection of around 320 Triumph bikes that chart so much of the brand's incredible history. Dick makes the long trek North each year to Durham to let us see these ‘dream’ bikes.

This year Dick is bringing with him :

  1. Buddy Elmore’s Triumph T100R that won the 1966 Daytona 200 starting 46th on the Grid, starting the DAYTONA brand for Triumph!  This bike ended nearly 30 years of US (Harley Davidson) and Canadian leadership at the 200-mile race.
  2. The 500 cc Triumph Tiger 100 Daytona (T100T) was developed by Triumph's Chief Engineer and designer Doug Hele and launched as a production motorcycle the following year.

The legendary Triumph 500cc racer sacrificed low-speed tractability for a big step up in power at 3,500rpm to deliver arguably the most famous Daytona race in history.

Elmore sped past the whole field to win by a full minute at an average 96mph, and into Triumph and racing folklore.

Just as powerful as its rivals but much lighter at just 315lbs, its place in history was officially recognized when the Daytona name again appeared on the Triumph 750 sport bike in 1990-91.

After the 67 Daytona win the bike was bought by an American collector and eventually Dick traced it an bought it for his collection twenty five years ago. Since the race this bike has never been seen in public so for classic race fans and any motorcycle enthusiast this is a must see. The only picture we have ben able to find is of Buddy Elmore crossing the finishing line at Daytona i 1966 (Above)

  3. Original 1958 1st pre production Triumph Bonneville in a special Blue & White colour scheme. Again this bike has not been on public viewing

Get a good look at the bikes on Sunday at Bikes 2019 …. and bring your camera’s along to get some special photos of rare classic bikes

Durham River Cruise (NARPO 100year celebration) next Saturday, 22nd June

The Boat Cruise and Bar-be-cue on Saturday 22nd June is now open to all, not just NARPO members.
The function is very heavily subsidised by a grant from NARPO to ensure that we can all celebrate the Centenary of NARPO in our own areas.
To that end the function has been advertised in the Peeler and on the website.
To date the organising committee only have 43 people attending, sad really after all the effort that goes into the organisation of things like this.
The branch have therefore decided to open it up to all and have asked that it be circulated again to perhaps try and 'jog a few memories' and spur some members into action.
It is appreciated that June is holiday time for some, but surely not all the other 700 NARPO members in Durham Branch.
If you and your friends or family can spare the time for an evening cruise in Durham next Saturday night and in doing so help support your local Durham Branch NARPO and meet some ex colleagues then please contact the Branch Secretary :
Stu Ingram to book your tickets which are £10 per person on 01388 814768. or email him on sji1179@btinternet.com.
Cheques to be made out to "Durham Branch - NARPO" and sent to 2, Whitworth Close, Spennymoor, DL16 7LH. or speak to Stu to arrange payment by bacs.
