Death of retired Police Officer, PC1712 William (Bill) Simpson (Updated)

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of retired Police Officer, PC1712 William (Bill)Simpson, who died at home at Burnhope on Saturday 17th December 2022,aged 69 years. 

Bill was appointed by Durham Constabulary on 1st May 1972 and underwent his initial training at Newby Wiske, North Yorkshire.  He served at Bishop Auckland, West Auckland, Coundon, again at Bishop Auckland (Assistant Jailer) and finally at Barnard Castle. 

Bill also carried out a period of duty in 1982 as Temporary Detective Constable and it was during that time that he and the late James (Jim) Brian Porter attended a report of a robbery at Chamberlain Phipps’ factory at Greenfields Industrial Estate, Bishop Auckland.  He was stood alongside Jim when shots were fired at them.  The two officers fell to the ground, Jim being fatally wounded, the event played heavily on Bill’s mental health.  

He medically retired on 11th March 1999. following this incident, 

Bill was one of three officers to be awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery.

Bill is survived by his son Peter, daughter-in-law Katharine, his grandchildren and great grandchild.

A funeral service is to be held at 11.30am on Tuesday 1st August 2023 at Stranton Crematorium, Tanfield Road, Hartlepool TS25 5DD, just off the A689 (Opposite Morrisons Petrol Station).

The funeral is NOT private and the family request that where possible, you wear something with a touch of blue.

Whickham Police Reunion

A Whickham Police Reunion is to take place at Swalwell cricket club on Wednesday 9th August 2023. If you were stationed there or in Traffic, Dog Section or other branches based there or if you were a member of the police club all including civilian staff are welcome to come along.

This is not a ticket event just turn up from 7pm to have a drink and a chat with former colleagues.

Heroic police officers who died in the line of duty will be remembered by colleagues during a charity cycle ride

Officers from Durham Constabulary are taking part in The Police Unity Tour at the end of this month to raise money for the Care of Police Survivors (COPS) – a charity which supports families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty. The tour is an annual long-distance ride that sees hundreds of police officers, staff, and their families converge on the UK Police Memorial at the National Arboretum, in Staffordshire, to remember their fallen colleagues.

On Thursday, July 26, Assistant Chief Constable Tonya Antonis, Inspector Ed Turner, and Sergeant Pete Tate will set off on their four-day ride, during which they will cover 260 miles, before arriving at the arboretum on Sunday where they will take part in a special service to remember those who have lost their lives on duty.

They will also be joined by Inspector Lee Morris and Phil Stephenson, from Durham Police Federation, who will be providing support to the riders throughout their journey. The trio will leave Durham City and head first to Coxhoe, where they will pay tribute to Durham officer, PC William Shiell, who was tragically shot dead after responding to reports of a burglary on March 1, 1940.  (https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/7985873.police-officers-murder-sent-shockwaves-village/)

The 29-year-old left behind a young widow and a three-year-old daughter. All of Coxhoe stopped work for his funeral, at which around 200 of his fellow officers attended. His killers, William Appleby and Vincent Ostler, from Bradford, were convicted of the murder and sentenced to death by hanging on July 10, 1940.

From Coxhoe, they will head down to York where they will join other riders from the North East Chapter and make the onward journey to Staffordshire over the next three days.

ACC Antonis, who is taking part in the full event for the first time, said: “This is a very special event, and it is a real honour to be part of it this year. “Every day our officers and staff head off to work and put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities; but tragically, some of them don’t return home to their families after their shift has ended. “This event is a way to honour our colleagues who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to raise awareness for the amazing work that COPS does in supporting their bereaved families.”

Inspector Turner added: “It is always a real privilege to take part in this event. It is more than just a cycle ride – it is a chance for us to collectively ride in memory of our fallen colleagues, to show that we, as a police service, will never forget their sacrifice. “This challenge is not about any of us riders, but for the families of the colleagues we’ve lost in the line of duty. We serve and ride for them.”

Death of Retired Police Officer: PC1712 William (Bill) Simpson

Death of a retired Police Officer : Supt. Ronald Mcallister

It is with regret that we have to report the death of a retired Police Officer : Supt. Ronald Mcallister, aged 85 years, a member of Sunderland Branch of NARPO.Hr retired in 1992

Mr Mcallister  died  at a hospital  in Leeds on Saturday 1st July 2023.  He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Death of a retired Police Officer: DC 1349 James (Jim) Edward Watson McQueen

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of retired Police Officer, DC 1349 James (Jim) Edward Watson McQueen of Lesbury, Alnwick, Northumberland, who died at The Grange Nursing Home, Warkworth, Northumberland on Saturday 3rd June 2023, aged 85 years.

Jim joined Durham County Constabulary in 1961 and served at Consett, detached beat at Ebchester. He then went onto the Motorcycle Section at Newton Aycliffe and then onto Traffic Patrols (cars). A move to Serious Incident Squad (SIS) followed before a transfer to Special Branch. Jim received his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, prior to his retirement in September 1984.

He is survived by wife, Elizabeth and daughter Lindsay.

A funeral service is to be held at 2.30pm Tuesday 4 th July 2023 at St Mary the Virgin Church, Lesbury, Northumberland.

The service is not private.

Death of a retired Police Officer : Inspector Thomas Lewis COOPER

It is with regret that we have to inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer : Inspector Thomas Lewis COOPER who died in the QE Hospital Gateshead on 30th may 2023 aged 83 after a long illness.

Tom served in Durham Constabulary for over 30 years and following service at Chester-le-Street, Durham and Barnard Castle was a D Sgt on the Crime Support Unit.  He was promoted to Uniform Inspector and posted to Bishop Auckland / Crook from where he retired.

He is survived by his wife Renne and one son Terry from a previous marriage.

The funeral will take place at Birtley Crematorium at noon on Friday 9th June.

Durham Constabulary Male Voice Choir are holding their 2023 Concert at Spennymoor Town Hall on Saturday, 10th June, at 7pm

Cenotaph Parade and Service 2023

The Royal British Legion is planning to hold the Ex-Service and Civilian Contingents attending the Parade and Service at the Cenotaph, Whitehall, on Remembrance Sunday, 12th November 2023.

NARPO has applied The Royal British Legion to send a contingent of Forty-Four (44) members, to take part in this unique national event, in the heart of London. However, we cannot guarantee we will receive all our requested number of places.

Due to heightened security measures the Metropolitan Police need to conduct individual security checks on all participants. Therefore, basic personal information will need to be provided in advance for each applicant.

Ticket holders will need to bring both photographic ID and a document showing proof of address with them for access to Horse Guards Parade via the staffed Police entry points on the day.

Applications to take part in the Parade and Service are now being taken from NARPO Branches.

Please note that nominations from Branches must be NARPO Members.

It should be noted that those attending will be required to provide some personal information, for security reasons and tickets will be issued in the Member’s name, therefore last-minute replacements will not be possible.

Attendees will be required to assemble no later than 10.00am in Whitehall and be aware of the physical demands of standing in Whitehall for at least 1½ hours and then marching for at least 1½ miles, possibly in inclement weather and of tight security measures on the day.

Death of Retired Police Officer’s Wife: Doreen Quickmire

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Doreen Quickmire of Bishop Auckland, who died on Sunday 2nd April 2023, aged 77 years.  

Doreen was the wife of retired Police Constable 667 Douglas Quickmire who served with Durham Constabulary’s Dog Section between 1972 and 1979 and latterly in the Town Office at Crook Police Station, before retiring in 1993.

Doreen is survived by husband Douglas, son Graeme and his wife Susan, daughter Sharon and her husband Andrew, grandchildren Dean, Beckie, Mathew and Katie and great granddaughter Isabella.

A funeral service is to be held at 11.30am Thursday 20th April 2023 at Wear Valley Crematorium, Coundon, Bishop Auckland DL14 8PE.

Death of a Retired Police Officer: PC 1414 Eric Findlay Strachan

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer, PC 1414 Eric Findlay Strachan of Chester-le-Street, who died at his home on Monday 13th March 2023, aged 78 years.

Eric was appointed to the Metropolitan Police Force on 13th January 1964, serving at Kennington / Oval ‘L’ Division; after transferring to Durham Constabulary in 1974 he served predominantly at Chester-le-Street, the Peterlee, ending his service at Durham City Police Office.  Eric received his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, but was sadly medically retired in 1987.

His photograph depicts him, in ceremonial uniform in 1965, in preparation for the State Funeral of Sir Winston Churchill.

He is survived by sons, Allister and Stuart; Eric’s wife, Audrey died in 2014.

A funeral service is to be held at 2.00pm Monday 3rd April 2023, at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ.

Death of retired Police Staff: Harold Cairns

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of retired Police Staff, Harold Cairns of Cassop, who died on Sunday 5th March 2023, his 71st birthday, in University Hospital North Durham.

He started work with Durham County Constabulary on 26th January 1972 as a Dispatcher in force control room, remaining in that post up until his retirement on 28th January 2011.  He was very proud of his service with Durham Constabulary.

Harold’s wife, Vera, predeceased him in 2018.  He is survived by brothers, Thomas, Ian, Stephen and Darren, his nieces Amanda and Melanie and their respective children, Kieran and Conner; Aurora, Aryanna and Alexander as well as many other nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.  He is described by his family as being a ‘fun uncle’ and role model, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and this ethos has permeated down through the family.  His amazing presence will be a great miss to them all, and especially great nephew Kieran, who spent most of his time with him.

Harold’s funeral service will be held at 2.30pm on Friday 17th March 2023 at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ

Darlington Sub-Division Pensioners Night 2023

 “A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S SOIREE”  Darlington Sub-Division Pensioners Night

Following on from last year’s success, we are delighted to announce another Pensioners Night.

It will take place at Darlington Cricket Club, Feethams, commencing at 7.30pm on Thursday, 11th May, 2023.

The evening is open to all retired Police and Support Staff who served or worked in the sub-division. There will a free drink on arrival and pies and peas will be served later in the evening. Plus, a raffle with some wonderful prizes.

Death of Retired Police Officer’s Wife: Beaty Bainbridge

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Beaty Bainbridge of Chester-le-Street, who died on Monday 27th February 2023, aged 74 years.  

Beaty was the wife of retired Police Constable 328 Allan Bainbridge who served with Durham Constabulary between 1974 and 2000, latterly with the Accident Investigation Unit.

After leaving school Beaty worked as a shop assistant and also as a Health & Safety Officer.  She was an accomplished seamstress and owned her own business.  Serving as a councillor for Chester-le-Street (East Ward) for some 15 years, in May 2022, she was also elected as Chair of Durham County Council.

She is survived by husband Allan, son Michael, his partner Amanda and their children, Craig, Ben, Thomas and Sam, daughter Debbie, her partner Derek, grandchildren, Laura and Rachel, and great grandchildren Jack and Liam.

A funeral service is to be held at 10.30am Tuesday 21st March 2023 at St Mary and St Cuthbert’s Church, Church Chare, Chester-le-Street DH3 3QB

As Chair of Durham County Council Beaty supported two charities and donations in lieu of flowers are requested to be directed to: Great North Children’s Hospital, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Haswell and District Mencap.

Death of Police Widow: Audrey Muriel Stratford

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Police Widow Audrey Muriel Stratford of Chester-le-Street, who died on Thursday 5th January 2023, aged 90 years.

Audrey was the wife of the late Sergeant Joseph Edward (Ted) Stratford, who died in 1998 and served at Chester-le-Street.

Audrey was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and attended Canning Street School, upon leaving she worked at Books Fashions in Newcastle.  She met Ted, originally from Halifax, at Oxford Galleries Dance Hall and they married in 1951.  They had four children and lived in Chester-le-Street before moving to Durham in the 1970’s. 

Whilst Audrey spent much of her time at home looking after their children and later their grandchildren, she worked in the Civil Service for a time and volunteered with the WRVS at Durham Hospital Tea Bar.

She is survived by her daughters, Josephine and Catherine, sons, Stephen and Philip, 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren

A family funeral service took place on Wednesday 1st February 2023 at Durham Crematorium.

Death of a retired Police Officer: PC 1271 John Robson

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer: PC 1271 John Robson of Peterlee, who died in Sunderland Royal Hospital on Thursday 23rd February 2023, aged 81 years.

John joined Northumbria Police in 1969 and stationed at Sunderland.  Following amalgamation, he transferred to Durham County Constabulary covering mainly Peterlee and Horden before retiring in 1993.

He is survived by sons Ian and his wife Julie, Jonathan and his wife Leigh and David. Grandchildren Chloe, Matthew, Ethan, Holly, Caitlyn and Camryn and great grandchildren Aurora, Lennon and Freya.

A funeral service will take place at 10.30am Thursday 16th March 2023 at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ.

Death of Police Widow Eileen Hillery

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Police Widow Eileen Hillery of Darlington, who died in Darlington Memorial Hospital on Saturday 28th January 2023, aged 86 years.

Eileen was the wife of the late Inspector Thomas William Hillery, who died on 17th August 2019, aged 85 years.

She leaves daughter Sharon, son-in-law Colin, grandson Adam and his fiancé Teo; son Ian, daughter-in-law Anne and granddaughters Alex and Joanna and her husband Matt.

A funeral service took place at 12 noon on Friday 17th February 2023 at the West Cemetery Chapel, Darlington.

POLICE PENSION / STATE PENSION

When you reach state pension age, you will be notified by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and awarded your pension accordingly. 

The DWP then has a responsibility to notify HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), who then notify your Police Pension Provider; this will be Durham Constabulary for those who received their Police Pay and subsequent Police Pension from them.

State Pension is a taxable income, but not taxed at source, and the purpose of HMRC’s notification of your State Pension is to facilitate the adjustment of your Tax Code, in order to ensure that you are paying the correct amount of Income Tax.

Notification between these various bodies usually takes around 2 months. You will also notice a slight reduction in your Police Pension as per Police Pension Regulations.

It has come to our attention that HMRC has, in some cases, delayed notification to Police Pension Providers, resulting in a number of retired police officers having increased tax deductions from their Police Pension. HMRC may well come to some arrangement for the ‘back tax’ to be spread over a number of months, rather than taking the increased and unexpected deductions over a short period of time.

If you are due to qualify for your state pension, once received, it may be advisable to contact HMRC and request that prompt notification of such made to your Police Pension Provider. Hopefully this will prevent you being in arrears with them and your income tax is proportionally distributed throughout the tax year.

Death of a retired Police Officer: PC 1380 John (Jack) Mather

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer: PC 1380 John (Jack) Mather of Consett, who died in University Hospital of North Durham on Friday 27th January 2023, aged 81 years.

Jack joined Durham County Constabulary on 1st April 1962.  After his initial training and probationary period, he was a beat officer before transferring to Traffic Patrols (North End), working in the court office at the end of his service, retiring in June 1984.

He is survived by wife Ruth and son Richard.

A funeral service will take place at 1.15pm Thursday 16th February 2023 at Mountsett Crematorium, Ewehurst Road, Dipton DH9 9JP.

Death of a retired Police Officer: Sgt 408 Henry (Harry) Napier

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer: Sgt 408 Henry (Harry) Napier of Seaham (formerly Horden), who died in Sunderland Hospital on Friday 6th January 2023, aged 84 years.

Harry joined Durham County Constabulary in 1964.  After his initial training, he served at Seaham, Bishop Auckland, Peterlee and Durham, including various Section Offices before retiring in 1991.

Harry is survived by wife Brenda, sons Terry and Andrew, and granddaughter Daisy.

A funeral service will take place at 1.00pm Tuesday 7th February 2023 at Sunderland Crematorium, Chester Road, Sunderland SR4 7RS.

Family flowers only; donations in lieu to the RNLI or to the George Elmy (Lifeboat) Restoration Fund.

Death of a retired Police Officer: DC 1303 John Chesney (Ches) Brighouse

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer: DC 1303 John Chesney (Ches) Brighouse of Spennymoor, who died in Darlington Memorial Hospital on Thursday 19th January 2023, aged 85 years.

Ches joined Durham County Constabulary in April 1961.  After his initial training, he was posted to West Hartlepool, Ferryhill, Stockton CID, Durham City CID, Spennymoor CID, finishing his service in uniform at Durham City, retiring in 1986.

He was a long-standing member of Durham NARPO, serving on the committee for many years and was recently made a NARPO Life Member.

Ches is survived by wife Maureen, son-in-law Tony and granddaughter Katy; sadly, their daughter Lesley died in June 2020.

Ches’s funeral is to be a private cremation.

Durham Constabulary Historic Print

 In the late 1990’s, under the leadership of Chief Constable George Hedges, Durham Constabulary commissioned a Durham Police Historic Painting.

This superb painting has an instantly recognisable montage backdrop from around the force area, whilst in the foreground are police officers, vehicles and animals, all taken from force photographic records, resulting in a uniquely blended historical 'snapshot' of the force from inception to current day

Colour prints are individually signed by the artist and strictly limited to 999 in the edition and you may wish to contact us to see if a special number is available (i.e. your collar number).  Each print is a unique opportunity to own and hand down a special celebration of policing through the ages.

Blue Lamp Prints is a company run by husband and wife team, Sue and Mark Custerson; Mark, at the time of the production, was a serving Police Officer with Hertfordshire Constabulary.

Ownership:

A number of these unframed prints are still available at a cost of £41.00 and at least one retired officer, who was unaware of the print’s existence, has recently purchased a copy, which was allocated with the officer’s Police number.

The print would measure some 34.5” x 15” once framed and has the Force Crest printed centrally below the picture.

Question:

When Mark and Mick were touring the County in preparation of the painting, they visited Darlington Police yard unannounced and photographed a number of Police vehicles.  They then travelled to Darlington Railway Station, where they were soon joined by uniformed officers in shirt sleeve order, one male and one female.  The reason for the impromptu meeting was to be questioned as to who they were and why they were taking photographs at the rear of the Police Station.

These two officers and their Peugeot Police Vehicle are depicted in the bottom right of the print.

Chairman’s Christmas Greetings

May I take this opportunity, as we near the end of yet another year, to wish our Branch Officers, Committee and our entire membership a Merry Christmas and a Happy and safe New Year.

I know that sadly some of you have suffered recent bereavements and others are dealing with personal and family ill-health; please take some sympathy, empathy and caring thoughts from your Durham Branch Family.  Please let us know if either you or someone from our Policing Family are in need of assistance and we will try and help and guide you, either ourselves or through third-party organisations.

We are all being hit with the increasing cost of living, prices for food and energy only seem to be going in one direction.  Please look after yourselves and each other and make sure that you keep warm and fed, even if this means looking slightly at our lifestyle.

I am sure that those who have close families, children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren will seek pleasure seeing or speaking to them at this festive time of the year.

Whatever your faith or belief I reiterate to you, with no intention to offend anyone, please have a Very Merry Christmas.

Death of a retired Police Officer: DC 987 William Hodgson

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer: DC 987 William Hodgson of Stanley, who died in the University Hospital of North Durham on Tuesday 13th December 2022, aged 89 years.

William joined Durham County Constabulary on 31st May 1954.  After his initial training, he was posted to Durham City and from 1965 he served as a Scenes of Crime Officer with Stanley CID, up until his retirement on 31st August 1984.

William is survived by daughter Lyn, sons John and Mark and their respective spouses, Roger, Shirley and Jill.  Grandchildren Gemma, Andrew, Michael, Alistair, Rebecca and Ben, and great-grandchildren Penny, Arthur and Harry.

A funeral service will take place at 2.00pm Monday 9th January 2023 at Mountsett Crematorium, Ewehurst Road, Dipton, Stanley DH9 9JP.

Following the funeral friends are invited to join the family at the Hobson Hotel, Front Street, Hobson, Newcastle-upon-Tyne NE16 6EE, a short distance from the crematorium.

Death of Police Widow: Joyce Neal (widow of retired Superintendent Colin Neal)

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of Police Widow, Joyce Neal, who passed away in Sandringham Care Home, Bishop Auckland, on 11th December 2022, aged 93 years.

Joyce was the widow of retired Superintendent Colin Neal, who died in June 2003, aged 71 years.

Joyce is survived by sons Kelvin and Richard, and daughter Kathryn, their respective partners, Beverly, Kathryn and Derek, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren

A funeral service will take place at 1.45pm on Tuesday 3rd January 2023, at Shildon Methodist Church, 3 Main Street, Shildon DL4 1AJ

Death of a Retired Police Officer: Superintendent 392 Keith Tweddle

It is with deep regret that we have to inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer: Superintendent 392 Keith Tweddle, who died in the University Hospital of North Durham, Durham City on Tuesday 6th December 2022, aged 84 years.

Keith joined Durham County Constabulary on 30th November 1959 and following initial training was posted, in uniform, to Hartlepool, Bishop Auckland and St Helen Auckland.  After transferring to CID, he worked at Jarrow, Barnard Castle and then Darlington as Detective Sergeant.  He also returned to Barnard Castle where he served as Uniformed Inspector.

Between 1977-79, Keith was Personal Assistant to the Chief Constable.  He then took the post of Durham Divisional Commander before postings at Aykley Heads in CID Operations and Personnel Department.

He then served a term as Sedgefield Sub-Divisional Commander.  This was followed by a return to Police HQ within Community Relations.  His final posting, between 1990-93 was as Deputy Divisional Commander of Uniform Operations Department, retiring on 31st October 1993.

During his Police career, Keith was Chair of the Durham Male Voice Choir for 7 years and between 1987-1993 he organised the Durham Police Pro Am Golf competition.

After retiring from the force, Keith undertook voluntary work with St Cuthbert’s Hospice, Durham.  He was also actively involved, for many years, with Haswell and District Mencap as their Charity President.

Keith is survived by wife Pamela, sons Kevin and David (Retired Inspector), daughter-in-law Gillian and 5 grandchildren.

Death of a Retired Police Officer: PC 1114 Arthur Pringle

 It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer: PC 1114 Arthur Pringle of Brandon, who died in North Tees Hospital, Stockton-on-Tees, on Tuesday 22nd November 2022, aged 80 years.Arthur joined Durham County Constabulary on 1st April 1962 and after initial training he began his police career at Stockton.  Later that year he was posted to Hebburn and then to Detached Beat at Whitburn.  Arthur then transferred to HQ Traffic Patrols (Motorcycle Section), followed by duties covering the Meadowfield Panda from Durham City.  A year in the City Office preceded Divisional Car Duties, finishing his service manning the County Prison Van, retiring on 5th January 1985.

During his police career Arthur was part of life saving swimming team.  He was also a member of the force fishing team, winning the Sea angling championship in 1979 and was a member of the team that hosted the Qatari Princes’ annual fishing event.

Arthur is survived by Margaret, his wife of 60 years, daughters Alyson, Diane, Debra and Vicky and reunited with youngest daughter, Lisa who died in October 2021; their respective husbands and partners, Graham, Mark, Richard, David and Daniel, 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will take place at 10.00am Thursday 8th December 2022 at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ.  Following the funeral, friends are invited to join the family at Brandon Cricket Club.

Death of Police Widow: Maureen Cromarty (wife of retired Superintendent David Edward Cromarty)

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of Maureen Cromarty, who passed away in University Hospital of North Durham, on 17th November 2022, aged 83 years.

Maureen was the widow of retired Superintendent David Edward Cromarty, who died on 22nd October 2022, aged 83 years.

Maureen was born in Preston, Lancashire and after leaving school she trained as a journalist with a local newspaper.  However, due to her father’s promotion within the Civil Service the family moved to Northallerton in North Yorkshire.  Their home was two doors away from the man she would spend the rest of her life with; David Edward Cromarty.  Their relationship quickly blossomed and on 15th August 1959 they married.

In 1962 David joined Durham Constabulary and Maureen became a typical police office’s wife of the 1960’s, taking in stray children, stray dogs and the odd stray arrested person at their police house in Coxhoe.

In 1973 Maureen became an administrator for Durham County Council; a role she later undertook with Bedfordshire County Council when they moved there, due to David gaining promotion to Superintendent in that Force.

The couple retired in 1991 and moved back to County Durham and enjoyed a long and very happy retirement together, travelling the world and completing 54 cruises!

Following David’s sad death in October 2022 Maureen suddenly fell into serious illness and in a matter of days passed away, perhaps of a broken heart following 63 years of happy marriage.

Maureen is survived by son David (retired Ch Insp) and partner Clare, daughter Suzy and partner Mick (who reside in New Zealand), grandson Stuart and granddaughters Emma and Jody and 5 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will take place at 3.00pm Thursday 1st December 2022 at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ.

If you worked as a Police Cadet, Junior Fireman, Cadet Instructor or member of staff at the Police Cadet Training School at Hardwick Camp, Sedgefield in the 1960’s then this reunion is for you!

1962 marked the first intake of cadets at Hardwick Camp, this year marks the 60th Anniversary and we thought it was a good time to have another reunion following our last successful event in 2021.

We would like to invite ALL who attended the camp during its tenure from the early 1960’s until its closure. Please come along, there will be someone you remember! Large name labels will be available on the night!

The venue this time is again Sedgefield Cricket Club, TS21 2BY. The location of the venue will provide the opportunity for a nostalgic visit to where you spent your teenage years!

A buffet will be provided together with an audio-visual show of pictures from your life at Hardwick Camp along with other memorabilia.

Tickets are £10.00 each, as per the last event and are limited to ex cadet, junior firemen, instructors and staff simply due to the restriction on numbers for the venue. Order soon to avoid disappointment.

Death of a retired Police Officer: PC William Kennedy Stableforth.

It is with great regret that we have to inform you of the death of one of our three Life Members, former PC William Kennedy Stableforth.
Bill died in the University of North Durham Hospital on the 28th October 2022 aged 92 years.
Bill was a member of the NARPO Branch committee for many years and his long-standing support and guidance were much appreciated.
Bill leaves a wife Pamela Anne and son David.
The funeral will be held at Durham Crematorium at 11:30 hours on Thursday 24th November.
The funeral is not private and the request is for family flowers only.
A retirement collection will be made on leaving the service and the collection will be divided between the NSPCC and the RNLI.

Death of Retired Police Officer: DCI 1659 John (Jack) Ainsworth

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer, DCI 1659 John (Jack) Ainsworth, who died in Sunderland Royal Hospital on Saturday 29th October 2022, aged 80 years.

Jack joined Durham County Constabulary in 1962 and following his Initial Training, he served at Hartlepool, Darlington, Easington Lane, East Rainton and Fingerprint Bureau.  Following a short spell in uniform at Peterlee, for reasons of promotion, he transferred to the Crime Support Unit.

His latter service was as head of the North East Fingerprint Bureau, taking him up to his retirement in 1992.

After retiring he remained with Durham Constabulary as a civilian trainer in fingerprints, based at Harperley Hall and moving to Police Headquarters at Aykley Heads when the training was transferred there.  Jack thoroughly enjoyed this area of work, meeting and training people from all over the world.

Jack is survived by his wife Irene, son David, daughter Susan and grandchildren James, Kirsten, Alice and Richie.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Friday 18th November 2022 at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ.

Digital Memorial Consultation Process

Many colleagues may be aware of the Police Arboretum Memorial Trust.  It was the Trust that built and created the new UK Police Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire that was dedicated in July last year in the presence of King Charles III (at the time HRH the Prince of Wales).

It has always been the Trust’s ambition to develop a Digital Memorial that was accessible to those who cannot visit the Arboretum to complement the physical Memorial. This online tribute will extend policing dedication and commemoration to a wider national and international audience.

This is your chance to participate in the consultation process that will help to shape future plans. The survey will close on 18th November but should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

Please promote this as widely as possible across our force area, with bereaved families and within our local communities, so as many views and opinions as possible can feed into the process.

Death of a Retired Police Officer: Superintendent David Edward Cromarty

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of retired Police Officer: Superintendent David Edward Cromarty, who died in the QE Hospital, Gateshead on Saturday 22nd October 2022, aged 83 years.

David joined Durham County Constabulary in 1962 and following his initial training at Newby Wiske was posted to Stockton.  His next posting was in 1964, as a beat officer at Coxhoe before becoming a Cadet Training Instructor at Sedgefield Camp in 1968.  When the Police Headquarters at Aykley Heads was opened, he continued in Cadet Training at the purpose-built cadet training school.  He remained in cadet training until 1973, being promoted to Sergeant in 1971.

When he moved from cadet training, David performed Sergeant duties at a number of Sections within the Chester-le-Street division.

In 1978 he was promoted to the rank of Inspector and was posted to Bishop Auckland, followed by a move to the Traffic Department.  Between 1982-1984 he was a Recruitment Officer at Police HQ and when promoted to Chief Inspector in 1984 he worked in Durham City and Force Control Room.

David transferred from Durham to Bedfordshire Police in 1988, where he was promoted to Superintendent.  In 1991, he sustained a shoulder injury whilst tackling an offender who was causing damage to a Section Office.  He retired later that year after 29 ½ years’ service.

David is survived by his wife Maureen, son David (retired Ch Insp) and daughter Suzy (who resides in New Zealand), their partners Clare and Mick and their children and grandchildren.

A funeral service will take place at 11.00am Friday 11th November 2022 at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ.

Death of a retired Police Officer: PC 996 John (Jack) Bennett

It is with great regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer: PC 996 John (Jack) Bennett (known affectionately as "Jailer Jack") who passed away in the Bannatyne Care Home, Peterlee on 11th October 2022, aged 88 years.

Jack served for 25 years before retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Dog Section and he and his Doberman Police dog "Kahn" won many competitions and awards.

He also played Indoor Bowls for the England and the National Police Team.

Jack was the early loved husband of Miriam who passed away in 2018. and is survived by his son Gavin and daughter Tracy.

The funeral will be held at Durham Crematorium at 11-30am on Tuesday 8th November.

Death of a retired Police Officer: PC 1552 Alan Smith

It is with great regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer: PC 1552 Alan Smith, who died on 21st October 2022 aged 66 years.

His service in Durham Constabulary was based in Stanley, Consett and Durham City where he performed uniform uuty. Alan retired after 30 year's service in 2009

He is survived by his wife Allison and their son Jay.  He is also survived by his mother, brother and sister.

Alan died in St Cuthberts Hospice Durham, from an illness first diagnosed in 2018.

There is to be no formal funeral service as such as Alan didn't want to put his family through the ordeal.  His death is being dealt with by way of Direct Cremation

Death of a Retired Police Officer : PC 878 Derek Horn

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer, PC 878 Derek Horn, who died at St Teresa’s Hospice, Darlington on Sunday 16th October 2022, aged 85 years.

Derek joined Durham County Constabulary in 1965.  His first posting was at Jarrow where he worked on Motor Patrols.  He transferred to Barnard Castle in 1970, before moving to Eggleston in 1976, where he remained until his retirement in 1989 as a result of ill-health.

Derek is survived by his wife Deleno, daughter Louise, daughter Michelle and her husband Lee and their three daughters, Hannah, Rebekah and Francesca.  Our thoughts are with them all at this sad time.

Death of a Retired Police Officer: PC 1436 Colin Joseph HOGG

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer, PC 1436 Colin Joseph Hogg, who died unexpectedly at The Gardens Care Home, Darlington on Monday 17th October 2022, aged 83 years.

Colin joined Durham County Constabulary on 25th June 1962 and began his police career at Darlington; he later transferred to Control Room, before moving to the Motorcycle Section.  After a period on the bikes Colin worked at Bishop Auckland, before moving back to the Traffic Department, on both motorcycles and patrol cars, retiring on 28th November 1993.

Colin received seven commendations during his police service.

During his career, he played rugby for the No.2 District North East England team and captained Durham Constabulary’s rugby team.

Following his retirement from the Police Service, he took up employment as a Security Officer at Darlington Magistrates Court from 1994 until 1999.

Colin is survived by his wife Rita.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday 2nd November 2022 at St Williams Church, Barton Street, Albert Hill, Darlington DL1 2LP.

Death Notice - Hilda Elaine Brewster (widow of retired motorcycle Sgt 378 Edward (Ted) William Russell Brewster)

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of Hilda Eileen Brewster, who passed away peacefully at Beeches Care Home, Stockton-on-Tees, on 23rd July 2022, aged 94 years.

Hilda was the widow of retired motorcycle Sgt 378 Edward (Ted) William Russell Brewster, who died on 24th December 2013, aged 88 years.

Hilda was Mother to Ian and Michael, Loving Gran to Cheryl, Jamie, Mark, Louise, Michelle and Carl.  Beloved Great Gran to Rhiley, Aiden, Lily, Aimee, James and Emily.  Also, a dear sister, aunt and friend.

A funeral service took place on Wednesday 10th August at 10:30am in Bluebell Chapel, Stockton Crematorium.

Durham Peeler Summer 2022 now available online

Ray Jones (Durham NARPO chairman) and Editor of the magazine Durham Peeler has been hard at work over the past few months to produce the latest (Summer 2022) edition of the magazine

Members should by now have had a copy of the Peeler  dropping through their letterbox (together with your 2023 diary) 

Ray said "I sincerely thank all of the volunteers who helped with the latest (Summer 2022) edition of the Durham Peeler magazine.  

To those who gave up their time to meet up at Ferryhill to package the magazines and diaries, the assistance given at Police HQ to stick franked postage labels on the envelopes being sent by Royal Mail and to the many fellow members who kindly hand delivered the remainder.

It is hoped that I can put together a Winter 2022 edition before the end of the year. 

The compilation of the magazine is very time consuming and the content and quality of the magazine relies heavily on reports, articles and photographs provided by its readers.  

If you have anything, either current or historic, please forward it to me for consideration of its inclusion."

I sincerely thank all of the volunteers who helped with the latest (Summer 2022) edition of the Durham Peeler magazine.

Blue Light Card are advising that it is available to anyone, irrespective of their membership grade, with a  NARPO membership number.

Death of Police Widow : Lorna Davison

It is with great regret that we inform you of the death of Lorna Davison, who died peacefully at her Tudhoe home, with her daughters by her side, on 7th August 2022, aged 78 years.

Lorna was the widow of the late retired Sergeant 1289 John Osborne Davison, who died on 9th April 2020, aged 80 years, whose funeral was carried out under Covid restrictions.

Lorna is survived by daughters Susan and Clare, grandchildren Keiran, Jacob, Holly, great granddaughter Sophia also sister Sheila.

A funeral service is to be held at 2.00pm 17th August 2022 at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate the lives of John and Lorna at Tudhoe Victory Club after the funeral.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Durham District Nurses

Death of a retired Police Officer's Wife - Jacqualine Theresa Graham

 It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of the wife of retired PC 888 Richard (Dick) Graham.  

Jacqualine Theresa Graham died peacefully in Lothian House Care Home, Clyde Terrace, Spennymoor on Wednesday 27th July 2022, aged 83 years. 

Jacqualine is survived by husband Dick, daughters Susan and Helen, grandson Rajan and granddaughter Ania.

A funeral service is to be held at 3.00pm, Wednesday 10th August 2022, at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ.

Family flowers only, donations in lieu to Lothian House Care Home.

Death of a retired Police Officer: Sgt 573 Ian William Hilton

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer : Sgt 573 Ian William Hilton, who died at his Warwickshire home on Tuesday 26th July 2022, aged 75 years.

Ian joined Durham County Constabulary as a cadet in 1963.

He started his police career in 1966 at Hurworth and also served at Darlington, later becoming a Police Cadet Instructor.  Following his promotion to sergeant Ian, served as Custody Sergeant at Consett and with Traffic Patrols North.  He had also represented the force at Rugby and retired in 1993.

Ian was awarded a bravery medal from the RSPCA, for rescuing cows from a burning barn.  

Ian is survived by his wife Rita, daughter Sally, sons Christopher and Alexander, grandchildren Emily, Owen, Grace, Jamie and Felix and brother Alan.

A funeral service will be held at 1.00pm Monday 15th August 2022 at Wellesbourne Crematorium, Oakley Wood Road, Bishop’s Tachbrook, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire CV33 9QP.  The service is not private.

Following the funeral, family and friends are invited to meet at The Hall, Pinfold Lane, Stourton, Shipston-on-Stour CV36 5HG.

Death of the Wife of a Retired Police Officer: Valerie (Val) Walker

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of the wife of retired D/Sgt Robert (Bob) Walker.  Valerie (Val) Walker died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on Tuesday 12th July 2022, aged 71 years. 

Val is survived by husband Bob and daughters Deb Walker and Kass Sygrove.

A funeral service is to be held at 12 noon, Wednesday 17th August 2022, at Harrogate Hill Methodist Church, Lowson Street, Darlington DL3 0EY.  Friends are invited to meet the family at the Methodist Church, after the service.

Death of a retired Police Officer : PC 802 Ian Andrew Whale

 It is with regret that we inform you of the death of a retired Police Officer :  PC 802 Ian Andrew Whale, who died in the University Hospital North Durham on Friday 15th July 2022, aged 68 years.

Ian joined Durham Constabulary on 29th December 1976 and retired in 2006.

He started his police career at Bishop Auckland before moving to Coundon Section, later returning to Bishop Auckland as a Scientific Aids Officer.  Ian also served at Crook, where he took on the role of Tutor Constable; he later moved into Force Control Room at Aykley Heads ending his service at Stanley and Consett Communications.

Ian received 2 commendations during his career.

Ian is survived by his wife Jenn, his two brothers, three sisters and nephews and nieces.

A funeral service will be held at 1.30pm Monday 8th August 2022 at Durham Crematorium, South Road, Durham DH1 3TQ.  The service is not private.

Following the funeral family and friends are invited to meet at the Marriott Royal County Hotel, Old Elvet, Durham DH1 3JN.

No flowers please; a retiring collection at the crematorium will be available for donations, which will be given to Durham Wildlife Trust, in Ian’s memory.
