Durham Constabulary set to recruit new police call handlers

DO you have what it takes to make critical decisions in emergency situations?

Think you could be the reassuring voice at the end of the phone for people during their hour of need?

Want a career at the frontline of policing? One which will challenge you, excite you and where no two days are the same?

Durham Constabulary are recruiting new police call handlers to work in the Force Control Room answering both 999 and 101 calls.

Applications open at 9.30am on Monday, January 15 and close on Tuesday, January 30. If a sufficient number of applications are received prior to the closing date the advert will be closed.

Following a paper sift, successful candidates will be provided with a detailed information pack. This will include guidance on the assessment centre process and interview skills and techniques.

Assessment centres will be held between February 12 and March 2, followed by interviews which will take place week commencing March 5.

Chief Constable Mike Barton said: “Our police call handlers are at the very heart of Durham Constabulary – they are the first point of contact for people in their hour of need, and deal with some of the most harrowing and distressing situations people will ever face in their lifetimes.

“To be a police call handler you need to be confident, hard-working and have a real desire to make a difference to people’s lives.

“You’ll also need to be able to think on your feet in a fast-moving and high pressured environment, and will have the ability to remain calm and composed when making critical decisions in emergency situations. The role is challenging, but extremely rewarding.

“If you think you’ve got what it takes to become a police call handler at one of the country’s best performing police forces, we want to hear from you.”

Ron Hogg, Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington, said: “This is a really important role. Police call handlers are the first voice from the Constabulary that many people speak to. It’s a rewarding role and I encourage people to apply.”

A time to reflect as we approach Remembrance Sunday

Flanders FieldRemembrance Day is also known as Poppy Day.

It was first observed in 1919, however until 1945 it was called Armistice Day. Traditionally there is two minutes of silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month because that was the time (in Britain) when the armistice became effective in 1918.
Today, in the UK Remembrance Sunday is also observed on the Sunday nearest to November 11th. So, in the United Kingdom, two minutes' silence is observed on November 11 itself, and on the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Sunday, ceremonies are held at War Memorials, all over the UK and over the years it has become a day to commemorate not just the sacrifice of servicemen and women but the suffering of civilians in times of war.

Remembrance Sunday is commemorated by church services around the UK and a parade of ex-service personnel in London’s Whitehall. Wreaths of poppies are placed on war memorials from the Cenotaph, a war memorial in Whitehall, to the tiniest war memorials in villages all over Britain. Small wooden crosses are placed in Gardens of Remembrance as private acts of remembering individual losses and suffering and people pin poppies to their coat or jacket.

History states that it was the poem 'In Flanders Fields' written in 1915 by Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian Medical Officer, that captured the imagination of the British people in the dark days of trench warfare on the Western Front when so many young soldiers failed to return. Six months before the Armistice, McCrae was brought on a stretcher to a big hospital on the French coast and saw the cliffs of Dover from his room. He died that night and was buried in a cemetery above Wimereux. Before he died, he said to the doctor: "Tell them this . . . If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep." An American woman, Miss Moina Michael, wrote a moving poem in reply and bought 25 red poppies, wearing one herself as a way to keep faith with the war dead; a French woman, Madame Guerin, came up with the practical idea of making and selling artificial poppies to help ex-service men and their dependents in need.

Britain's first Poppy Day was held in 1921 and the money raised helped children in war-devastated areas. The Royal British Legion opened its own poppy factory in London in 1922 to give practical help in time of need to all who have served in the armed forces and their widows and dependents. The paper poppies that are worn today are made by ex-service personnel and are sold by representatives of the Royal British Legion, an organisation of ex-servicemen and women. Today, they make more than 35 million poppies and 65,000 wreaths for the annual poppy appeal. Poppies grew in great abundance in the shell-torn fields of Flanders during the War. Because of its abundance it became the symbol of remembrance of two world wars.

Last chance to see the White Helmets (Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team)

White HelmetsThe Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team  will be appearing at BikeWise 2017  at Police HQ, Aykley Heads, Durham… TOMORROW (Sunday 23rd July)

This will be one of their last appearances as shortly after they confirmed their attendance at BikeWise 2017 it was announced the team will be disbanded after this summers performances.

This will be a unique opportunity to see the White Helmets who have been acknowledged as the oldest, best known and most accomplished motorcycle display team in the country, if not the world.

Formed in 1927, this season marks the 90th anniversary of the Team performing displays of motorcycling skills and whilst horses gave way to motorcycles in the display in 1937, many of the tricks they perform today are similar to those of the original riders. Based on their iconic helmets the Team adopted the world famous name ‘The White Helmets’ in 1963.  This coveted and prestigious item is an honour to wear and marks the riders out as one of the few able to perform such acts of skill.

The Team’s 23 riders on classic 750cc Triumph Tiger machines provide a fast paced, action packed display.  Wearing the full dress uniform of the Royal Signals along with their famous White Helmets the riders will perform a combination of high speed crossovers, spectacular jumps, skilful feats of balance as well as numerous reverse rides.

The Royal Signals has come a long way since those formative days using motorcycles to carry messages across the battlefield and are now modernising their image to show they truly are ‘Leaders in a Digital Age’.  Whilst this is the last year of entertaining and thrilling crowds with their dazzling arena displays, the Team’s excited to be performing one final season; demonstrating the teamwork, discipline and courage of the Royal Signals soldier.

Rain or shine the team will be performing so come along and cheer them on and see one one the final performances of this historic armed forces display team.

Entry to BikeWise 2017 is £2 for adults & children under 16 are free.

Part time Gardening…. Darlington area

Can anyone help out with this one or know somebody who could ?

Hi
I have been given your details by my local Narpo secretary in Lancashire as I'm trying to help my mum and dad.
My parents live at Darlington and have been trying to get a local Gardner to come in and look after their garden, which is not a large area but they do like to keep it well.
However my dad and mum are both becoming frail with various joint issues and not able to do so now.
The problem they have had is that they have contacted a number of workmen who advertise in the Darlington area and they have all failed to turn up to see them.
Down here in the local area, the Narpo branch has a list of retired officers who have started various businesses and can be called on to undertake work and I wondered if you have something similar or know of a retired officer who would like to contact them to be paid to undertake the work.
As I mentioned before it is not a large area and would probably involve one day or so a week, but my parents would discuss and agree what needs to be undertaken.
Are you able to assist me, any help would be much appreciated and I would forward my parents contact details if you can.
Kind Regards
Kevin Hall (kevin.hall1@talk21.com)

Thank You…… (Re Margaret Dinning)

Thank you for Donations Margaret Dinning

When Jim Holmes & John Bell mooted the idea of an impromptu ex traffic reunion they had no idea how many would respond but thought it would be a deemed a success if maybe 10-12 former colleagues turned up for a coffee and a chat at the Tea Barn at Pity Me - something to build on.

HQ Traffic - Informal reunion

Government Inspection Durham Constabulary H.Q. 1974 (Traffic Patrols North)Fred Purser; Norman Lee; Derek Sayers; Jack Blair; George Robson; ?; Ken Garbutt; John Curry; ? ; Ian Irwin; ?; Jack Fidiam;? ; ? ; Fred English; Norman Davison; Bill Bramfitt; Eric Brown; ?; Eddie Stangroom; Duncan Adamson; Gordon Balderstone; John Knaggs; Bill Sanderson; ?; Chris Dryden; Trevor Morgan; Geoff Carlon; Kenny James; Ronnie Tarn; Dick Hunter.

For some time now John Bell (ex PC494) and Jim Holmes (ex Sgt 504) have been pondering over the idea of organising some sort of re-union for ex Traffic Officers - especially those who served in the Traffic Department between 1970 - 2000.
The Traffic Department came in many guises - Traffic North & South, HQ UOD, Motor Patrols Sections 1, 2 & 3, Traffic Operations etc - a rose by any other name for driving police vehicles!

In the first instance their will be an informal meeting on the second Thursday of each month initially at the Tea Barn Cafe at Pity Me Nursery (DH1 5DE) which is just off the roundabout at Pity Me on the A.167.
The idea being that people go there in the morning from 10.30am onwards, grab a coffee and see who turns up for a chinwag.
This will be done two or three times in the hope it will catch on.
Depending on interest  and numbers something can then be organised something more formally.

The first date for this informal re-union will be on Thursday 9th March at the Tea Barn Cafe, Pity Me.

If anyone wishes to contact Jim or John for further details please send an email to : durhamnarpo@gmail.com & we will forward you their contact details

Death of a serving Police Officer : PC Gavin Smith

Gavin SmithDURHAM Constabulary is mourning the death of one of its officers, PC Gavin Smith.
Gav, who was part of the Police Interceptors team, died Wednesday, Feb 15th aged 34.
Gav had recently undergone treatment for cancer which had spread to his spine. He was treated in hospital and was then allowed to return home to Bishop Auckland and received an escort from his colleagues.
It was at home he sadly passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He leaves wife Kezi and daughter Tilly, four.
Kezi said: “I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support which has been overwhelming.
“It has been a real comfort to both me and Tilly that he was so well regarded by so many.
“We will both miss him so very much.”
Gav, who was originally from Whitley Bay, had been with Durham Constabulary for 12 years and worked with the Roads Policing Unit out of the Spennymoor station.
Colleagues had been fundraising to send him and his family away for a weekend. Sadly, that was not possible but proceeds will be passed on for them to use in whichever way they see fit.
Insp Ed Turner said: “Gav was extremely popular with colleagues and always had a smile on his face.
"He really was a glass half-full kind of guy and even right towards the end he was thinking about other people and about supporting his family.
“He will be sorely missed by all at the force.”
Our thoughts are with Gavin's family, friends & colleagues at this sad time

Radio Mast from ‘old’ Police HQ on the move

mast.jpg.gallery Mast 2 Radio Mast 1

The Radio Mast at the ‘old’ Police Headquarters is about to make its move to the new site, leaving the site free for the developers to start building houses which are already built and occupied on the main car park opposite the entrance to the old HQ.

The size of the crane which will lift the mast down is certainly spectacular & it’s worth a visit down Aykley Heads drive to see the final chapter in our former place of work.

If you haven't already seen this one before please click on this link which will take you to the vaults of the British Film Institute where you can watch the mast being erected on site (Obviously before the health & safety regs – have a look at 3m20sec, where a man in his vest pushes the mast into place !!) : http://player.bfi.org.uk/film/watch-radio-mast-for-police-headquarters-aykley-heads-durham-1968/

Tom Rounsley helps with family photos from the past

Many Thanks to retired Durham Sgt, Tom Rounsley who has sent an email with some more info re photographs that appears on the last page of the 2016 winter edition of the Durham Peeler titled Thornley Police Station.

TR3TR1The officer in the doorway is my great, great grandfather Sergeant 34 Thomas Sampson.
He started his police career in Plymouth transferring to Durham I believe in 1872.
He was promoted to sergeant in February 1882 and was stationed at Thornley until his retirement from the force in 1901.

The constable in the photo I believe to be a PC Cummings and the woman Annie Barker but I have no other information on them.

TR2 Sgt Samson's daughter married my great grandfather Police Constable 382 Samuel N Rounsley who I believe spent a lot of his service in the Spennymoor area.
He died not long before his retirement.
At that time any pension for the widow was at the discretion of the Chief Constable
The Chief Constables report on the 28th April 1919 reads - PC Samuel Rounsley No 382 died at Tudhoe on 28th February, 1919, after completing 25 years 282 days.
The maximum amount of gratuity which may be granted under section 2 (2) of the Police Act is £294  3s  4d.

My family then skipped two generations with Durham Constabulary before I joined in 1976 retiring in 2006
If I've got the technology right there should be attached three pics - the original from the peeler , a photocopy of a photocopy of  Sgt Sampson, the other is two pics of PC Rounsley one near the start of his service and the other towards the end.
I find the change in the uniforms interesting.

PS. keep up the good work - I moved to Worcester over 2 years ago to be nearer family so the NARPO web site with all it's information and publications are a real tonic.
Please pass on my regards to all the team.
